The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Department at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has organised a five-day course titled 'Radiation Protection Officer Course 2016'.
The course being held at Bayt Al Dhiyafah in Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City will conclude on August 31.
About 40 participants comprising radiation protection officers from the country's healthcare sector are attending the course organised in line with HMC's continuous education programmes for its healthcare staff.
The first of its kind course on radiation protection procedures features presentations based on the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Basic Safety Standards (BSS). It also focuses on providing and applying the radiation protection principles in medical practices by pioneering experts in the field.
Dr Huda al Naemi, executive director of Occupational and Environment Safety at HMC and chairperson of the course, said:"Course participants include radiation protection officers (RPO) who are medical physicists working across all HMC hospitals. Other course participants include employees from Qatar Petroleum, Primary Health Care Corporation, Qatar Army Clinic, Qatar Police Clinic, Sidra Medical & Research Center and Aspetar Qatar."
Dr Naemi explained that to give the participating RPOs a clear understanding of their legal responsibility according to Qatar's law, the first lecture during the course was presented by Aisha al Baker, director of 'Hasmat' and Radiation Protection Department in the Ministry of Environment.
"Ms Baker explained about the main roles and responsibilities of RPOs in Qatar in addition to highlighting the education and training requirements for RPOs. This is a good opportunity for the radiation safety officers to interact with the law representative in Qatar," said Dr Naemi.
Other course speakers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan and Lebanon include Dr Abdalla al Haj, chairperson of Middle East Federation of Medical Physicist (MEFOMP); Ahmad IA Hamdan, director of Radiation Protection Directorate in Jordan and member of MEFOMP; Dr Laila AlBlooshi, acting head of MP Section at Dubai Hospital, the UAE and member of MEFOMP; Dr Mishary al Naimi, head of physics department in Kuwait and Ibrahim Duhaini, past president of MEFOMP.
